Patterns and Contrasts

Core Rules

Traditional case questions can help you recall a form you already know, but they are weak as a decision tool. Use the relation first, then use the question cue only as a secondary check.

  • Object inside the scope of action usually pulls toward accusative.
  • Object outside the scope of action, source, destination with do, or noun dependency usually pulls toward genitive.
  • Recipient or experiencer usually pulls toward dative.
  • Role, instrument, companion, or static relative position usually pull toward instrumental.
  • Topic, being inside a context, or movement over an area usually pull toward locative.
  • Movement into or onto a target often pulls toward accusative.
  • Prepositions are checked after the relation is identified, not before it.

Key Preposition Contrasts

These headers are organized by meaning first. The preposition and case question cue come after that, not before.

  • do + dop means movement toward a place: Idę do domu, Jadę do Krakowa.
  • w + bie means movement into an enclosed space, while w + miejsc means being inside: Wchodzę w wodę, Jestem w domu.
  • na + bie means movement onto a target or event, while na + miejsc means being on a surface or at an event: Kładę książkę na stół, Jestem na stole, Idę na koncert.
  • z + dop means from, while z + nar means with: Wracam z pracy, Idę z bratem.
  • pod, nad, przed, za, and między with instrumental describe static relative location: Mieszkam pod Krakowem, Stół stoi przed oknem.

Minimal Pairs

Each pair below contrasts two meanings that look close on the surface but trigger different Polish tools.

  • Idę do domu points to destination, so use do + dop. Jestem w domu points to inside location, so use w + miejsc.
  • Kładę książkę na stół points to movement toward a target, so use na + bie. Książka leży na stole points to surface location, so use na + miejsc.
  • Wracam z pracy points to source, so use z + dop. Idę z bratem points to companionship, so use z + nar.
  • Widzę psa keeps the direct object in scope, so accusative works. Nie widzę psa strongly points toward genitive under negation.
  • To jest lekarz names identity or classification, so nominative works. On jest lekarzem names role or function, so instrumental works.

Common Verb Government

These are not random case labels attached to verbs. Each header still points back to a relation such as object, recipient, source, topic, or role.
